Posted Nov 21/11 - Brewers name new coaching staff for 2012 season!
|
On November 13th the Brewers governing board accepted the resignation of manager Nate Gorr. Gorr coached the Brewers for 3 season and compiled a 50-44 record as skipper of the Brewers. Gorr lead the Brewers to the state tournament in 2009 and deep into the Region 7C tournament in 2010. The Brewers named Scott Wawrzyniak as their new manager. Dave Sell and Grant Grochow were named assistant managers.
The Brewers 2012 roster will also have a new look. Long time Brewer sluggers Dan Ford, Jason Schade, and Josh Monahan announced their retirement following the 2011 seasons. The Brewers also lost Mitch Lang to retirement and Keith Trudell followed a job opportunity in Green Bay. Returning from abroad for the 2012 season is Tony Beringer. The Brewers are looking to add a few more players to fill the big shoes left by the retirements.

Posted Jun 6/11 - Jun 6/11
The Red Devils end Brewer four-game win streak with an 8-5 win at Vollmer Field on Sunday, June 5th. Watertown scored its first four runs with just one hit as Wibs' legs struggled to recover from some grueling concession-stand hours prior to the game which caused him to never command his pitches as he usually does ; ) But hats off to him for pushing through a quad injury that would have kept a lesser man out the past couple weeks (i.e. see the MN Twins). Wibs had a great day at the plate with four hits, while Scott Waz, Schade and Josh Kraby had two hits a piece.
Defensively, the Brew Crew played well. Left a few too many runners on base after wearing down Kohlsie and then seeing J. Brokl who also struggled to find the zone. Schade and Gorr tied Monahan up and forcibly made him put on his cleats to pinch hit in the 9th with bases loaded, down 8-5. Okay, I admit he willingly savored the opportunity for one last AB vs. J.B. On a 3-1 count, Brokl left a pitch down the middle for Josh to pop u in the infield to end the game. Unfortunate, but still a thrilling ending to what might be the best rivalry Glencoe has outside of the Bluebirds.
Watertown's Ryan Hangartner was a Brewer killer at the plate (featured in the photo) with 3 hits and 3 RBI. This youngster, like many of the new Brewer starters, has a bright future in the Crow River Valley League.

Posted Oct 13/10 - Brewer fundraiser at One Eyed Willy's, Nov 20th
In a continued effort to raise money for uniforms, we're planning a fund-raising night at One Eyed Willy's in Lester Prairie on Saturday, Nov.20th.
We'll be asking all players to sell at least five tickets ($5 per ticket) in advance of the event, but you'll get a book of 10 and certainly be able to get more if you can sell more.
If each player sells at least five tickets, you will reduce any potential out-of-pocket expenses players would have to pay to get new uniforms.
If you don't sell five tickets, your expense for uniforms will be higher than those who did sell five tickets. It's time we start asking for some accountability and ask that ALL players begin to pull their own weight in fund-raising.
If you think the city or our team has endless funds to maintain the field or purchase uniforms or equipment, and that we don't need every player to pitch in, just read the local newspaper to see how difficult it is to acquire funding for new lights at the baseball field where we play. The Glencoe City Council has difficult decisions to make regarding expenses in 2010 and beyond. We're used to funding our uniform, equipment and energy costs at the field not only for ourselves, but for the rest of the community that used the field. We play a minority of the games at the field and practice infrequently (as you tell from our defense this year), but we may need to start raising more money to assist the city if it cannot afford to provide as much funding as it has in the past for the field.
Let's start by raising enough money for new uniforms and see what's left to help fund the continued maintenance of Vollmer Field.
Thank you, and contact me directly with questions. We'll get tickets distributed as soon as Franklin Printing produces them.
Tickets are $6 at the door, but $5 in advance as I mentioned. There will also be prizes all ticket buyers will be eligible for even if they cannot attend. For those who do attend, they can also use the ticket to redeem $1 on a burger basket. We're fortunate that Dave Goff likes Matt Roberts. Matt, Josh Monahan and myself have put time into organizing this while Dave is helping us by taking on the primary marketing efforts for it. Dave will also provide music at his bar via a DJ to be determined.
Get the word out. Don't tell me you can't find five people to buy a ticket. Either sell them as a $5 donation if they don't plan to attend or don't live nearby and/or tell them it's essentially a ticket that gives them a chance at a prize even if they don't attend. Or, just save up $25 so you can buy these tickets yourself if you don't sell any.
We'll also provide tickets for any board members who would like to assist in selling advanced tickets. The staffing at the beer bust is yet to be determined, but it's likely we'll be able to staff it with players and friends/family of players again since this is a players' initiative to raise money for uniforms. | Posted Aug 27/10 - Work day scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 12th, noon |
When you win a bid to host the state tournament, teams need to put an extraordinary amount of time into prepping their parks.
That tournament takes place one year from now, so we need to have all players that can pitch in show up for this work day.
We'll have two in September. We'll probably need the entire afternoon to get some work done, so even if you can't show up until 1 or 2 p.m., please make plans to help out.
We have some players at college, so I really need the guys who are still around to pick up the slack, even our high school guys. If someone can't make it, let me know. We need our players to contribute more than just on-field production. Thank you for your efforts to give us everything you can off the field, as well.

Posted Aug 16/10 - Brewers focus turns to fantasy football
The Brewers lost two close games in the final weekend of the region, 4-3 to Loretto and 5-3 to Young America.
The Larks of Loretto won the No. 1 seed and drafted Adam Gregg or Maple Plain.
Young America drafted Billy Soule of Maple Plain. Soule is a Wayzata native who pitches out of the bullpen for the University of Minnesota.
Gregg is a former pitcher of the year in his days playing for St. Boni in the Crow River Valley League.
Both teams open the state tourney with games on Saturday in Bird Island.
The Brewers finish their season 18-15 having achieved the No. 1 seed in the North heading into the region, batting .314 as a team in league play and scoring an immense amount of runs. Ryan Grams will be a candidate for pitcher of the year in the league, and a few hitters in the lineup have statistics that will get them mentioned in the discuss for MVP of the league.
The Brewers continue to plan for the upcoming 2011 amateur baseball state tournament which will be held in Glencoe and Brownton. With a little better luck and play next year, the Brewers could find themselves in the state tournament again on familiar turf, Vollmer or Tadsen Field in Glencoe or Brownton.

Posted Aug 8/10 - Josh M. and Ryan G. lift Brewers to Region win over Brownton
Ryam Grams threw a brilliant shutout on the mound for the Brewers on Saturday, Aug. 7th in Cologne. Grams out-dueled Andrew Fredericksen, the draftee pitcher from Hamburg who threw a complete game for the Bruins.
Josh Monahan doubled in two runs early in the game that held up for a 2-0 win over the Crow River Valley (CRVL) South opponent, Brownton. Brownton sported a 14-4 regular season record in league play, the best record of any Class C team in the entire CRVL (north or south).
From the second inning through the 8th, the Brewers did not allow a Bruin runner to reach second base. Draftee catch, Nic Haller, from the Mayer Blazers, called a great game behind the plate and contributed significantly to the shutout.
The win for Glencoe gave them their 10th win in their past 12 games, and it makes two consecutive shutouts for Grams.
Up next is the Loretto Larks who defeated Young America 7-0 to advance to Friday night's matchup in Norwood with the Brewers. Chris Lenton threw a complete game shutout over the YA Cards in the victory,
despite Nik Franck saying the ball looked as "big as a pumpkin" coming
out of Lenton's hand. The Larks' Lenton is a draftee pitcher from the Albertville Villains, the prize pick when Loretto surprised Maple Plain by beating them twice in the seeding game to take the No. 1 seed from the Northstar East Division. Lenton plays with local Plato Bluejay rivals Matt Odegaard and Tyler Lang for the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks.

The Brewers earned the No. 1 seed from the North headed to the region with a 1-0 thrilling win over Watertown. The win clinches a first-round bye in regions for Glencoe. The Brewers drafted catcher/pitcher, Nic Haller, from Mayer, and pitcher, Kyle Krotzer, from St. Boni. Welcome to both, and let's begin to focus on winning the next game!
The Brewer playoff schedule is as follows: Region schedule- Saturday, August 7th, 4 p.m. in Cologne - No. 1 seed (Glencoe) from North Division plays its first Region game vs. Brownton. Batting practice at 1 p.m. in Glencoe.

Posted Jul 17/10 - Glencoe Brewers clinch North Division Top Seed!
With a 6-4 win over Watertown on Friday night (7/16/10), the Brewers are the 2010 top seeded Class C team in the Crow River Valley League's North Division. Had Watertown edged the Brewers, the Red Devils would likely have walked away with a North bragging rights this year. Instead, the Brewers, who already had a bye in round one of the playoffs, will face the winner of the 4th and 5th seed in round two. The fourth and fifth seed will include two of the following three teams, New Germany, Mayer and St. Boni.
In the clinching win, which puts the win streak at six straight, Ryan Grams pitched a complete game, striking out seven. allowing eight hits, walking three and hitting one batter, improving his Crow record to 4-1 on the mound.
Jason Schade finished 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and a stolen base. Schade dislocated his finger with a head-first slide into second and had to leave the game. The timetable for the slugger's return has not yet been determined. The Brewer's have great depth this year on the bench in terms of offense, but Schade's absence in the lineup will be felt.
Brewer No. 9 hitter, Tony Beringer, was 3-for-3 and took a fastball to the ribs in his final at bat. No broken ribs were reported, but Tony did uncharacteristically skip the post-game trip to the VFW, hopefully he's not home tending to broken ribs. With the way the Brewers have hit the ball this season, there really is no traditional No. 9 hitter in this order. In multiple categories, Glencoe has been one of the best hitting teams in the league this year.
The Brewers regular season will conclude with a game at Winsted on 7/18 at 1p.m. and then a Friday night game at Prior Lake at 7:30 p.m. (7/23/10).
The playoff schedule has yet to be announced, but the first playoff series for Glencoe will begin on either Tuesday, July 27th or Wednesday, July 28th.

Wins over New Germany (twice), Cokato, and Watertown made it a perfect week. Plus, a huge thank you to all the players, board members and community members who supported our golf tournament and silent auction.
Juan Berenguer blessed us with his attendance at the golf tourney, and we were at capacity for teams at our tournament! We had no extra carts left after all the golfers were on the course!
Back to baseball... with the Brewers winning streak continuing, and an improbable loss suffered by Watertown at St. Boni on Sunday, we have now climbed to a tie in the North Division with Watertown.
With just two leagues games remaining, the Brewers could clinch the North Division title on Friday night when the Red Devils come to Glencoe for a 7:30 showdown. It'll be a playoff-like atmosphere.

On Wednesday, Grant Grochow's walk-off pinch hit in the bottom of the 9th gave Glencoe a 6-5 win over New Germany.
On Thursday, John Thell threw the shiniest gem he could throw, a complete-game shutout, giving Glencoe 3-0 win over Cokato. The game was completed in one hour and thirty-nine minutes.
The Brewmakers travel to New Germany on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game in the sauna-like heat.

Posted Jun 25/10 - Brewers down Hawks to advance in Miller Lite Invitational
Tony Paggen helped the Brewers exact some revenge for a loss suffered one week prior by getting the 6-5 win on the mound with five innings of work vs. Hamburg on Thurs, June 24th.
Stephen Wiblemo relieved Paggen after he got into a bases-loaded jam in the 6th inning and earned the save by throwing the 6th and 7th innings (tournament games are 7 innings in length).
Brewer leadoff man, Brian Knight, finished the night with two RBI, 1 SB and two runs scored. His 4th-inning, two-run home run was key in the Brewers rally, but the team was strong as a whole offensively.
Josh Monahan was 3-for-3 with one RBI. Lang, Ford, Wawrzyniak, Kraby, Grochow, Beringer and Wiblemo each contributed quality at bats throughout the game to defeat Craig Alison and the Hamburg Hawks, one of the best teams in the Crow River Valley League - South Division.
Most importantly, the Brewers' infield took the outs they could get and didn't try to do too much. The outfield was aggressive and played well. It had been a awhile since the Brew Crew had played error-free baseball.
Glencoe faces the winner of St. Joe/Forest Lake in Green Isle at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Posted May 17/10 - Mayer Blazers upset Brewers 7-5
Nic Haller and the Mayer Blazers allowed 12 hits, including three solo homers, to the Glencoe Brewers on May 16th, but Mayer mustered four of its eight hits in the third inning alone, and built a 4-0 advantage which increased to 5-1 in the sixth inning. A 5-4-3 double play (Beringer-Grams-Ford) in the sixth limited the damage and ended the threat.
In the 7th inning, Glencoe chipped away again, cutting the lead to 5-2 on a Grams home run (his second hit and second run scored of the day) but stranded a runner at second base. Scott Wawrzyniak's line drive to left field hit just a few feet from the top of the left field wall, and Glencoe was not able to drive that run in.
A single, two walks, and a hit batsman allowed Mayer to score two additional runs off the Brewer bullpen in the bottom of the 7th.
in the 8th, Josh Monahan and Jason Schade blasted back-to-back home runs. Heading to the 9th, Mayer led 7-4. Beringer led off with a single and was forced out at second base on a fielder's choice. Paggen scored on an RBI single by Monahan, his third hit of the game. But Mayer ended the Brewer rally, cementing the win on their home field.
When asked by his wife to summarize the keys to the game, Brewer Manager Nate Gorr noted, "Mayer played a great game, allowing us just one free baserunner, while we had somewhat of an off day, allowing four walks and two hit batsmen. The Brew Crew played good defense and hit the ball relatively well. The timing of the hits will come around, and we'll be fine."
Gorr also said he plans to rededicate himself to staying positive after his post-game rant caught some by surprise.
Trudell 6IP, 8H, 5ER, 5K, 1BB, 1HBP, Paggen 2IP, 1H, 2R, 3K, 1ER, 2BB, 2HBP
Monahan 3-5, 1HR, 2RBI, 1R Grams 2-4, 1HR, 1RBI, 2R Beringer 1-3, 1SB, 1BB

We won't have a lot of guys able to join us Tuesday, so I'll need everyone who said they thought they could make it Tuesday night. Unfortunately, there weren't a lot of other good dates available for this game, and at least some guys will get some playing time on Tuesday night (at Gaylord, 7:30 start).

Posted May 8/10 - Chanhassen tops Glencoe 2-1 in exhibition
The Glencoe Brewers made their first trip to Chanhassen's beautiful new baseball field, but the day was soured a bit by the 2-1 loss. A post-game trip to Buffalo Wild Wings helped ease the pain of the loss. A Jason Schade sighting occurred at BW3. He's targeting a return to the field next week as he continues to deal with the same injury Joe Mauer currently has.
The Brew Crew struck first when Brian Knight singled to start the game. He stole second, then third, and scored on the errant throw to third base. That would be the only run of the day for the Brewers, who had scored 28 runs in their first two games of the year.
Brewer pitchers performed at a high level, allowing just four hits altogether. It was the highlight of the game for Glencoe.
B. Jenneke 5 inn, 2H, 8K, 1ER J. Bratsch 1-2/3, 2H, 1K, 1R, 0ER S. Wiblemo 1/3, 0H, 0ER
Glencoe's hits... one each for Paggen, Knight, Lang, Wiblemo, and Beringer
Additional injury notes... Jeff Monahan will return to the field shortly after getting the green light from his doctor following a minor procedure on his knee.
With the return from college of Brian Knight and Josh Kraby, the Brewers continue to add depth to its roster.

Posted May 2/10 - Brewers 17, Brownton 11... what?!!
Two teams known for strong pitching met Sunday, May 2nd at Vollmer Field. But the pitchers couldn't prevent the fireworks.
Your Brew Crew improved to 2-0 on the season behind home runs from Jason Schade, Stephen Wiblemo, Ryan Grams (featured in photo) and newly re-acquired, former Brewer and now current Brewer outfielder, Mitch Lang. On a windy, spring day, the ball carried well to left field, but wind or no wind, the Brewers swung the bats extremely well.
Prior to the game, the Brewer Organization and the Glencoe Area Chamber of Commerce entertained more than 60 kids who attended the 2nd annual Kids Day at Vollmer Field. It was wonderful to see such a large crowd at the ballpark. Thanks to the Bruins, as well, who brought a significant portion of the fans to the game. You can see why we'll make good partners as the 2011 Amateur State Tournament co-hosts!
